File Under: Contributions & Limits, Political Committees & 527s

Advocacy groups are causing quite a stir in the Philadelphia mayor’s race.  Millionaire Tom Knox has spent more than $8 million of his own money in pursuing the mayor’s office.  The rest of the field has been unable to keep up thanks to campaign finance limits enacted prior to the election.

To fill the vacuum ‘527’ groups have formed, but not without controversy.

Governor Rendell said, “I think they defeat the purpose of the election law in Philadelphia.”  Others allege that they “pervert the whole campaign process in Philadelphia” and add “nothing but meanness to this election.”

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Inquirer admitted “voters are getting more help in sizing up Knox” thanks to the ‘527’ organizations.

We’ve included links to two of the ads so that you can judge for yourself whether they make for a better informed electorate in the Philly mayor’s race.
