As the anniversary of Citizens United rolls around and we begin an election year, Super PACs and the role they play has piqued public interest. CCP Chairman Brad Smith was on American Public Media’s Marketplace Thursday morning to discuss why Republican super PACs are out raising their competitors:
Media coverage of Super PACs, which are allowed as a result to the Citizens United and Speech Now decisions, has varied widely. In many cases, Super PACs are attacked as institutions that are a threat to the country and need to be dismantled. In other cases, they are characterized as vehicles for candidates that otherwise would not have stood a chance against more established candidates. On occasion, news outlets find ways to accuse them of being both. Either way, Super PACs are a valuable way for voters not happy with the political establishment to remain involved in politics.
